HIPAA Update

HIPAA is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. This group of Federal regulations, which has been modified numerous times since its inception, has rules that went into effect on October 16, 2002, relating to the transmission of electronic data.  The privacy regulations became effective April 14, 2003.  Another date for HIPAA was the final electronic claims regulations, which became effective October 16, 2003.  However, on September 23, 2003, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), which is responsible for enforcing the HIPAA regulations, announced a contingency plan for continuing acceptance of non-HIPAA-compliant transactions.  Most claims submitted through BRS and on to WebMD Transaction Services are being sent to the insurers in HIPAA-compliant format.  CMS and payers urge that all providers continue to send as many claims as possible electronically, even if a specific payer is still not receiving the claims in the HIPAA-compliant format.  The Security Rules went into effect on April 20, 2005, and the National Provider Identifier went into effect on May 23, 2007.

DOM for Windows Version 6.13-6.14

DOM for Windows Version 6.13, released in January, 2006, and Version 6.14, released June, 2006, included significant enhancements.  The current DOM Version 6.14 includes a lab case tracking system integrated with the DOM scheduler, improved bulk insurance check payment accounting, and the availability of Real-Time Eligibility (see paragraph above).  DOM now offers the option of adding Appointment Tracking, which is a separate application providing graphical information on the patients' progress through the office, including warnings for patients that have been waiting too long in the reception area.  For details on the current program features, see the release notes accompanying the update, or contact BRS.

Windows 98 Support Ended

Microsoft  ended comprehensive support of the Windows 98 operating system on June 30, 2003.  Note that Microsoft's Windows 95 operating system support ended on December 31, 2001, and Microsoft "mainstream" support for Windows 98 officially ended on June 30, 2002.  For details on Microsoft's product life and support cycles, click here .  If you follow the link to Microsoft's web site, it may seem that Windows 98 product support continued until January 16, 2004.  However, looking at the footnotes carefully, you will see that Mainstream support for Windows 98/98 SE ended on June 30th 2002, and no-charge incident support and extended hotfix support ends on June 30th 2003.  Only paid incident support is available from Microsoft for Windows 98 after June 30, 2003.  As system warranties expired, BRS no longer provides operating system support for PCs running Windows 98.  If you have not yet replaced your older computers with newer Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 systems, you may wish to consider the productivity benefits of upgrading, including more reliable and faster system operation.  If you would like a quote for replacement computers, please contact BRS Sales at 914-747-0201, or email to sales@brscomputing.com .

New Statement Envelopes Available

Based on suggestions from our clients, BRS now offers a new larger return window envelope for patient statements.  This full-size envelope eliminates the need for your patients to fold or trim the statement return portion in order to fit in the return envelope.  When combined with the BRS perforated statement paper, this adds to the quality and performance of your patient statement presentation!  The BRS perfed statement paper provides blank paper with the top portion perforated for easy detachment by the patient, and is intended to be returned with payment.  Combined with DOM for Windows ver. 6.4 features which print a credit card section on the statement, this provides maximum flexibility for patient payment.  For complete details and pricing information on the BRS Patient Statement System combining perfed plain paper, and send and return window envelopes, please call BRS Sales at 914-747-0201.

Citrix Presentation Server Client Software

Citrix released a new version of the Presentation Server Client (formerly called "ICA" client) in May, 2006.  You may download the client software for connection to Citrix Presentation Server, MetaFrame™ and WinFrame™ servers.  To download the full Windows client via the internet, go to http://www.citrix.com/English/SS/downloads/details.asp?dID=2755&downloadID=25368&pID=186 (Apple Macintosh users click here, scroll down, and select the proper Macintosh Client).  For Windows, find the "English"  Recommended Version 9, and choose Get Software.   Then, choose the Download Here option, and select Run (unless upgrading several systems, in which case you may save to disk and run or open later).  During installation, use the defaults (the standard answers), and if you are running Version 6 or higher of Citrix Program Neighborhood, choose the "upgrade" option.  At the Select Client dialog, click on Web Client, and choose X Entire feature will be unavailable (do the same for Program Neighborhood Agent if "X" is not already indicated).  If you cannot see the web links, or cannot view the download options, your system security settings may be preventing this.  Try going directly to the citrix.com web site, choose "Download", and select "Clients".  For Windows systems, then choose "Windows 9x/NT/2000/2003/XP - Windows 32-bit".  If you cannot see the selection, you may need to adjust your system security settings.  If you make any changes to your security settings, be sure to change back to the original settings when installation is complete.
